Many people search constantly for alternative natural ways to heal their bodies from health condition or illnesses. Aromatherapy is an ideal solution since it’s non-invasive and works to eliminate the source of the problem over time.
Aromatherapy uses essential oils extracted from flowers, herbs, or tree barks using steam distillation thereby resulting in highly concentrated pure oils. When used correctly, these oils benefit both the skin and body as a whole.
Aromatherapy refers to using the vapors of the essential oils by inhalation. However, one can use the oils differently to enhance their benefits. Other alternatives to get the most out of aromatherapy include bath body and spa. Under bath body and spa there are baths, massages, compress, and steaming.
1. Baths
One of the simplest and most enjoyable ways of enjoying essential oils is by using them when taking baths. Just add a few drops of essential oils to warm bath water. Bergamot, Chamomile, Mandarin, and Lavender are some good oils to try for relaxation. It is advisable to include several oils so that they enhance each other’s properties.
2. Massage
Massage is one of the most commonly used method of aromatherapy. It benefits the body in two ways – inhaling the scents of the oils and increasing blood circulation. Inhaling the aroma of the oils helps to stimulate senses resulting in relaxation. With enhanced circulation, massage helps in releasing energy trapped in stiff muscles as well as neutralizing toxins.
Through massage the absorption of essential oils is relatively high. Therefore, it should be mixed with a carrier oil that makes it even better spreadable. Ideal carrier oils for massages include Grapeseed oil, Olive oil, Sunflower oil, or a mixture. Ideal oils for massages include Lavender, Lemongrass, Eucalyptus, and Marjoram.
3. Compress
Cold and Warm compress are effective for relieving pain, swelling, and reducing fever. Adding essential oils in the compress helps to accelerate healing.
Cold Compress – Add a few drops of essential oils to a large bowl full of water and six ice cubes. Soak a small towel in the water, wring it and place it over the sore area. Good oils to include are Lavender, Sweet Birch, Clary Sage, and Marjoram.
Warm Compress – Add a few drops of essential oils to a large bowl full of warm water. Next, soak a small towel in the water, wring it and place it over the desired area. Let it sit for a couple of hours re-soaking the towel occasionally. Ideal oils to use for this are Bergamot, Clary Sage, Geranium, and Lavender.
4. Steaming
Steaming works particularly well for the face because it opens up pores thereby easing the absorption and clearing up impurities. It is also quite easy to do at home. Just fill a wash basin with steaming hot water and add a few drops of essential oils. Inhale the vapor for a few minutes then rinse it off with warm water. Palmarosa and Rose are ideal for mature skin while citrus oils work well for oily skin. For sensitive skin use Chamomile.
